What do you know, that you know? Day 55
I recently had a coach of mine ask me to journal on this question: What do you know that you know?
In other words what are you good at? What skills do you have?
I challenge you to pause from reading this and give it a try. Then come back and read the rest of this.
The results surprised me. When she first gave me the assignment I thought I would list things related to my education, experience, jobs that I’ve had or skills that I’ve learned. You know like driving a car, snowboarding, teaching exercises, information about health, fitness and the human body.
Yet almost immediately my mind went to what I call ‘who I am’ not ‘what I do’. It was characteristics about me. Thinks like being a good listener, being empathetic, building relationships, allowing people to feel seen & heard, the ability to help people solve problems, wisdom, insight, etc.
And the more I thought about it, the things I listed are what matters. I could make a list twice as long filling it up with things like knowing how to cook, snowboard or make a latte. But ultimately the things that I am are what allow me to learn those other skills, implement them and be effective performing them.
It’s been empowering to know what I know about who I am.
So if your list looked like skills or eduction, go back and ask a new question:
What do you know about who you are?
