I mentioned earlier that change is constant, but let me dig a little deeper…

Imagine the stereotypical “midlife crisis”.

You spend half your life creating a career and raising a family all of a sudden start to wonder “Who am I”? What do I want?

This is a classic shift in identity happening. When we see 50-year-olds driving sports cars and dating people half their age it’s because they don’t know how to express this internal shift at the soul level of wanting something different. They suppress and avoid this internal conflict through things, people, and experiences that aren’t truly fulfilling. 

While that might be the dramatic version - we are shifting our identity throughout our whole life. 

  • Graduating college and starting your career is a massive change in identity from student to worker.

  • Every time you start or end a relationship you are shifting your identity. 

  • Moving to a new city or starting a new job requires something new from you.

Whether you realize it or not you are changing. And if you don’t actively participate in the process of who you’re becoming it could lead to your detriment.

Even more subtle shifts happen all the time…

  • Falling out of enjoyment with a particular group of friends. 

  • Losing a desire to drink or party.

  • Choosing to get into a new hobby.

  • Showing up differently around the people who raised you. (One of my favorites and most challenging)

  • Speaking up around your family. 

  • Saying no to high school friends. 

  • Pushing back against societal norms or expectations for how you live. 

I’m sharing this to show you that like it or not, you will shift identities multiple times throughout your life - or at least experience a lot of pain and suffering if you go against your soul's calling.

And I’m here to help you with this process. 

HERE IS WHY IT’S SO HARD

In the metamorphosis process where a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly there is a literal war that is happening. What is lesser known inside the Chrysallis stage there is a moment in time where both cells of the caterpillar and butterfly are present. Through this rigorous process these cells start fighting each other to survive. The old caterpillar cells are hanging on with everything to survive while the butterfly cells must have immense resilience to persevere and come out victorious. 

Identity work is the same way. If you’ve tried time and time again only to see those old reactive patterns resurface, it’s because the ego is hanging on for dear life scratching and clawing to stick around. He’s not going down without a fight. 

And so if you really want to step into your highest self, you most certainly won’t come out unscathed.
