Right Place, Right Time - Day 25

I had a call with a client this morning where we he had a massive break through! For the first time in 9 weeks he finally started asking the question: “What’s really important? “ A little background is when I started working with him everything was “good”.

Work is good.

Family is good.

House is good.

Good, but not great. He has a successful career, beautiful wife and money. Sounds perfect right? Well I could tell something something was off from the first call , but it took some time for him to realize too.

For me it was hearing the monotone way he talked about everything in life. It felt “blah”, and average. There was no excitement or energy in his life. The tipping point was our third call when he told me he didn’t have any hobbies in life or a bucket list for that matter.

I’ve worked with people like this before and it’s not that they don’t know they just have gotten so caught up in their day to day that they stopped dreaming. So that was my mission: to help him dream again.

Fast forward to today’s call and he just got back from a beautiful vacation in Bali laying on the beach and exploring with his wife. The energy, clarity and enthusiasm he spoke with on this call was palpable even through the computer screen.

He began realizing maybe there were some changes he wanted in life and even asking himself what made him happy? And should he follow that?

The hang up though was about the fear of change and uncertainty. I dug deeper and the fear really came about the fact that he didn’t believe he was special. He didn’t think he had a unique skill set. He was just lucky stating: “My whole career has been the right place, right time.”

I spent the following half hour asking him questions about childhood, competitive athletic career and large margin of success in business relative to his career to point out that the things he considers simple are in fact what makes him “special”.

The reality though is that every single one of us is a product of “right place, right time”. The difference is what we do with that. I pointed out to hime a quote by Seneca: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” The opportunity is the lucky part, but not everyone will be ready or willing to take advantage of the opportunities.

We all need a little luck in our lives, but if you don’t act on it then that’s what makes you foolish.

I’m here to tell you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Whether you are on the verge of having your big break or in a season of growth don’t squander the opportunities coming your way. It may be what you have always been waiting for or the lesson you need to learn to get where you want to go.

Right place, right time is all up to you.
