Why I Love New Year’s Resolutions - Day 49
Well it’s almost that time of year again, jumping on one of the following band wagons:
“New year, new me.”
“This will be the year I finally ____ .”
“Finally 2021 (2020, 2019, etc.) is over now I can ___ .”
Does any of this feel familiar? I know I’ve been there.
There is something about a fresh start of a new year that breathes new life into you. Sometimes we need something to help act as the catalyst to make change in our lives. This is why I LOVE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS.
Yup, I said what I said. Let me explain why…
I believe momentum is one of the most powerful drivers in our life. If we can just get started then it quickly become a downhill battle. That’s why fresh starts are so great.
I used to feel so motivated and inspired at the start of every new school year, baseball season, and new year growing up.
There was something about the infinite possibilities got me excited. It felt like a second chance where you could use everything you’ve learned prior to this point in life to be better than ever.
But just like with new year resolutions these feeling of excitement and motivation would wane with these other fresh starts. And that’s why discipline is crucial to staying on top of these fresh starts.
So while I love New Year’s Resolutions it’s because they can be super beneficial of executed correctly.
Unfortunately most people only have half the equations. But DON’T FEAR, I’m here to the rescue with the best method to approach New Year’s Resolutions.
Let’s dive in!
So the key is to use the excitement and momentum to create some action in the New Year. The missing piece most people need is creating a plan to stay on track throughout the year.
The plan is twofold:
1) Reflect on the past
2) Create habits that stick
Now I know that sounds way too simple, but it really can be that easy. The first thing I want you to do is reflect on the past year and your previous goals.
What went well?
What could have gone better?
Then you are going to make 3 lists I call “Stop, Start, Continue”!
Start: Make a list of all the things you need to start doing in order to achieve your goals.
Stop: Make a list of all the things you need to stop doing that are holding you back from reaching your goals.
Continue: Make a list of all the things you are already doing well that are helping you get to your goals.
This is now going to be your guiding start for the new year. You are going to use this list to set up your schedule and understand the new habits you need to implement to hit your goals.
Which brings me to step 2: Habits that stick.
Now this can be a tricky one, but what I want you to understand is motivation of the New Year will get you started —> Habits are what keep you going long term.
For starters don’t bite off more than you can chew. For example if you have goals around going to the gym let’s make it sustainable so it becomes part of your lifestyle. It becomes so engrained in your routine that it’s as natural as brushing your teeth everyday.
Where most people mess up is they go to the gym 5 days a week for 2 hours which is totally unsustainable and they fall off after a month.
So if you only take one thing away from this email then I want it to be that New Year’s Resolutions can be a huge positive if done correctly. But to be done correctly you need accountability and a plan!
