TC 2021 - Day 29

On Saturday, I competed in one of the biggest CrossFit competitions in Colorado. This was my 5th year doing this comp so it’s fair to say it wasn’t my first rodeo. And yet there is something about competing that feels different than working out at your home gym.

You get a little more nervous, your heart rate spikes and at least for me there’s tunnel vision when on the competition floor. You can’t see a single face in the crowd or interpret any sounds. It’s all a blur.

I’ve noticed about myself that I either tend to stare off into space or look at a downward angle toward the ground when competing. It’s my way of getting “in the zone”. When the workout is over you can’t remember a thing.

But this is a rare picture of me not only looking straight ahead, but smiling.

I’m not sure what came over me, but during this large set of double unders I decided to scan the crowd and let go of complete focus for a brief moment.

As I was scanning I locked eyes with my best friend Matt and his girlfriend Nat. In a crowd of hundreds I spotted MY PEOPLE. I couldn’t help but smile. I think I even stuck my tongue out to let them know I saw them.

For a moment time stopped and in what felt like an out of body experience where I was fully focused on the workout and also full present at how great this moment was...competing in a sport I love with people I love.

I’m grateful Matt snapped this shot because it’s a reminder to not forget to enjoy the moment you are in. In a fast paced world I know I often get caught up in what’s next and forget to stop, look around and smell the roses.

One of my favorite all time quotes is: “The human connection enhances the human experience.”

For me that means do more of the shit you love with the people you love.

While I will keep chasing more moments like this with my people, I’m definitely gonna take more time to pause and soak it all in as it’s happening.
